Arizona Offices Brace for REAL ID Deadline: What You Need to Know

by

Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will enforce the REAL ID Act, requiring all U.S. travelers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. In Arizona, this means residents must possess the Arizona Travel ID—a driver’s license or ID card marked with a gold star in the upper right corner—to meet federal requirements.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) anticipates increased demand at Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offices as the deadline approaches. Residents are encouraged to schedule appointments or visit authorized third-party providers to obtain their Travel ID. To accommodate the surge, offices may extend hours and increase staffing. However, delays are still expected, and applicants should plan accordingly.

To acquire the Arizona Travel ID, applicants must provide proof of identity, such as a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport; verify their Social Security number by presenting a Social Security card or W-2 form; and confirm Arizona residency with two documents, such as utility bills or bank statements showing their current address. The Travel ID is valid for eight years and costs $25.

Residents who choose not to obtain the Arizona Travel ID can still travel domestically using other TSA-accepted forms of identification, including a valid U.S. passport, DHS Trusted Traveler cards such as Global Entry or NEXUS, or a U.S. military ID. However, relying on these alternatives may not be as convenient for frequent travelers.

With the enforcement date imminent, it’s crucial for Arizona residents to act promptly to obtain their Travel ID. Delays in processing and increased demand could lead to longer wait times, so scheduling an appointment or visiting an authorized provider soon is advisable.
