Gov. Hobbs Declares State of Emergency in Gila County After Monsoon Flooding

by

Governor Katie Hobbs declared a State of Emergency in Gila County on Saturday after catastrophic flooding from monsoon storms left widespread damage, hazardous conditions, and ongoing rescue needs.

The declaration unlocks $200,000 from the Governor’s Emergency Fund and authorizes the Arizona National Guardto assist local responders. Additional support has been activated through statewide and interstate mutual aid, including assistance from Nevada, to reinforce law enforcement, fire, EMS, and search-and-rescue operations.

“I’m heartbroken by the devastation in Gila County,” Hobbs said. “My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and the residents whose lives have been impacted. This declaration is a commitment to deliver every resource available to help. We will continue to work around the clock to ensure communities have the support they need to protect life and property.”

The governor will hold a press conference later today to provide further updates.

Resources already deployed to Gila County include:

  • Search and Rescue: More than 70 personnel from six sheriff’s offices and DPS teams are on the ground.

  • HAZMAT Response: Six hazardous materials teams, including mutual aid from California, are addressing chemical incidents.

  • Road Clearance: At least 25 ADOT crews are working to reopen damaged roads.

  • Aviation Support: DPS Ranger helicopters, drones, and Arizona National Guard aviation units are assisting search efforts.

  • Emergency Dispatch: Relief teams are helping 911 centers manage increased call volumes.

  • Incident Management: A six-member IMAT team is embedded in the county’s Emergency Operations Center.

  • Agriculture Response: The Arizona Department of Agriculture is assessing reports of livestock deaths and unsecured animals.

  • Law Enforcement: A 13-officer DPS detachment is providing backup for local police.

  • Joint Information Center: State and county agencies are coordinating public updates on evacuations, road closures, and safety alerts.
