Mesa Named Arizona’s Best-Run City, Ranks Among Nation’s Top 10

by

Mesa has been recognized as Arizona’s highest-ranked city for government performance, earning a spot among the 10 best-run cities in the United States in a new national study evaluating how effectively local governments deliver services.

The ranking, released by personal finance website WalletHub, placed Mesa 10th overall among 148 of the nation’s largest cities. The study compared the quality of services provided to residents against the amount cities spend, evaluating factors including financial stability, education, public safety, healthcare, economic performance and infrastructure.

According to the report, Mesa’s high ranking was driven by its strong financial position, relatively low long-term debt, healthy business growth and favorable public safety metrics. The city also received positive marks for economic indicators such as rising household incomes and a comparatively low poverty rate.

Mesa finished well ahead of Arizona’s other largest cities included in the rankings, with Phoenix placing 40th and Tucson 61st. City leaders said the recognition reflects ongoing investments in core municipal services, including public safety, water, transportation, parks and economic development, while maintaining a focus on responsible financial management.

As Mesa continues to experience rapid population and business growth, the ranking highlights the increasing emphasis local governments face in balancing infrastructure expansion with fiscal responsibility. Nationally, Provo, Utah, earned the top spot in WalletHub’s annual evaluation.
