Phoenix is looking to bring younger voices into its road-safety planning as the city continues implementing its Vision Zero strategy, which is designed to reduce serious and fatal crashes.
The city’s Street Transportation Department has opened applications for three non-voting student positions on the Vision Zero Community Advisory Committee. Eligible applicants must live in Phoenix, attend a local high school, college or university, and be between 17 and 25 years old. Selected students will serve for one year and are expected to attend the committee’s bi-monthly meetings.
The student members will join an advisory group that includes 11 members of the public. The committee provides feedback and recommendations related to Phoenix’s Road Safety Action Plan, which the City Council approved in September 2022. While the group does not have decision-making authority, its recommendations can help inform city leaders as they consider roadway improvements.
Adding student seats gives Phoenix a way to incorporate the experiences of younger residents who drive, bike, walk or use other forms of transportation. Applications close August 9, giving interested students less than two weeks to seek a seat at the table.
