Scottsdale’s Museum of the West Opens $12 Million Expansion This Week — And Saturday Is Free

by

One of Scottsdale’s most distinctive cultural destinations is getting significantly bigger this week, as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West debuts a $12 million, 12,000-square-foot expansion that adds four new galleries and a two-story wing to the existing facility.

The new addition, named the Louis Sands IV Center after the late Arizona businessman and philanthropist, will be unveiled Tuesday as part of a weeklong celebration running through Sunday under the theme “Unmistakably West.” Museum members get first access to the new wing on Friday, while the general public is invited to a free Opening Day Celebration on Saturday featuring live music, cultural demonstrations, performances and gallery programming throughout the day. Free passes can be reserved in advance online for expedited entry.

The four exhibitions launching with the new center cover a broad sweep of Western art and culture. They include “Visions in Bronze,” “From Earth to the Stars,” “Fire of Ages” and “Working Pardners: Masterworks from the Eddie Basha Collection” — a showcase the museum describes as one of the most significant private collections of Western and Indigenous art in the region.

For the museum’s leadership, the expansion represents more than additional square footage. Chief curator Andrew Patrick Nelson said the new space allows the museum to tell its story in a broader and more immersive way, while CEO Todd Bankofier framed it as a defining cultural moment for a city that has long marketed itself as the West’s Most Western Town.

The center bears the name of Louis “Buzz” Sands IV, a longtime Valley figure who built his career at Sands Chevrolet and later donated $10 million to the University of Arizona’s football facility. Sands, who passed away in 2012, was remembered as both a devoted Wildcats fan and a committed patron of the arts.
